Milan Milojevic is a highly acclaimed Australian printmaker. His heritage of Yugoslavian culture combined with Australian flora and fauna created a visual language where imagery was drawn from many references. Technically he is acclaimed for bringing recognition of digital media to a high artistic and academic level through combination of traditional etching and modern techniques, multilayered printing and the use of his own mixed colours.

As Head of Printmaking and further as Senior Lecturer Printmaking at UTAS for over 24 years he has had a major influence in the development, profile and growth of outstanding printmaking in Australia. Highly awarded in numerous national print awards including Hutchins, Freemantle and Mornington National Works on Paper, Milan is represented in National Gallery of Australia, all major public art and library collections in Australia and numerous private collections here and abroad.

My initial reaction to this new body of work (32 panels) is of Jorge Luis Borges exploring the steaming tropical jungles of the unconscious mind. I intuit that within this exquisite journey through a 24 hour cycle lies the soul of the artist – the creatures formed from Borges’ “Book of Imaginary Beings” going about their lives in a mountainous forested landscape created from engraving marks made by long dead artists as though their bodies had nourished the fecund environment.
Like the master printer that he is Milan has scoured the world for years to assemble a matrix of marks that epitomise the rigour of this painstakingly beautiful medium of the 18 th and 19 th centuries where each part of an image had its own special mark (series of lines/shapes). He has then reassembled them into his own unique forms to create mountains, trees, clouds, etc., which provide a solid foundation on which to construct his world.
Each 44 x 30cm image is of a size that allows intimate inspection and the tree motif provides a link for the eye to flow seamlessly through this, “day in the life of” his jungle. In my extremely humble opinion this is his best body of work to date.
