Jane James
I am a visual artist based in Brisbane, Australia. I travel to environments in the Asia Pacific region to collect material for my art projects and to conduct teaching residencies in Marine Art. The natural world, sea and marine conservation are central to my work, which is representational in media including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.
New directions recently emerged in my sculptural work as I built a sculptural furniture piece from data provided by remote sensing scientists during an artist’s residency in Brisbane’s EcoSciences Precinct.
A deep love of draftsmanship, craftsmanship and design underpin my art practice, which encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.
Whilst my work is largely representational, I use the manipulation of visual language to overlay additional meanings.
Rope has formed a central motif in my work, where it is used both as metaphor and visual element. I have a love of this material in its many forms, and the purposes for which they are designed.
Recent work has incorporated objects cast in paint, a unique process developed by me, and one I continue to explore in my latest body of work.
Another current project is underway to create two site specific marine installations entilted “Anthropogenic Art(i)facts” situated underwater, in Tasmania in 2019.
